Ever since the first time I saw Capoeira, the beauty and grace of this martial art has fascinated me.  It is unlike any martial art I have ever seen, combining its fighting style with dance, acrobatics, music and ritual.  What caught my attention the most is the playful feel of the game.  Instead of "fighting" with the other person as in most other martial art forms, in Capoeira they "play" with each other inside the roda (event where Capoeira is played).

Thoroughly captivated by this culture, I now train as often as I can.  I find that the harder I train, the deeper my passion for Capoeira grows.  As an artist, I have a need to share my passions through creative expression.  There are instants during the rodas when the energy is so high that I am completely entranced by what I am seeing, and in those instances I snap the shutter release.  Each image is uniquely rare and tells its own story of Capoeira.

I capture these amazing images using my Cannon Elan7 35mm camera and my Cannon 20D digital camera.  I love experimenting with the effects of cross processing slide film, my favorite being Kodak E100VS.  Other images are enhanced using Adobe Photoshop software.

My Capoeira photography is just getting started, as I have only been shooting Capoeira rodas and batizados since July 2003.  My intention is to share the beauty and style of Volta ao Mundo academy with Capoeiristas throughout the United States and Brazil.
